Background : Recent studies have shown that pharmacists have a role in improving psychiatric medication adherence. However, pharmacist interventions for psychiatric patients have not been implemented in Korea because pharmacists¡¯access to these patients is limited. The purpose of this study was to develop a pharmacist-led medication counseling service for psychiatric patients and to evaluate the patients¡¯satisfaction with the service.
Methods : Between August 27, 2013 and January 28, 2014, 251 psychiatric outpatients were referred to a pharmacist for medication counseling. 60 patients were referred again to answer the question- naire for the evaluation of the service. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Seoul National University Hospital.
Results : Of the 60 patients referred for the satisfaction survey, 21 patients responded to the questionnaire(35%). Most patients were satisfied with the counseling and stated that they needed pharmacist-led medication counseling because the pharmacist could provide easy explanations(47.6%). They indicated that information about the name and effects of their medication was most helpful (57.1%).
Conclusion : This study suggests the necessity of a pharmacist-led medication counseling service for psychiatric patients. This can be the basis for further studies about pharmacist¡¯s role to improve adherence to psychiatric medications.
